Frequently Asked Questions

First-time voters must register to vote before casting a ballot. You can register as a voter online or at any designated voter registration centers within the electoral area where you wish to vote. Registration procedures can be found in the Registration page.

No. You can only register at one location. We recommend that you register in the area where you spend the most time in. Remember: Where you register is where you vote. You will be assigned to your designated polling station permanently. If you go to a different polling place,your name will not appear on the roster and you might not be allowed to vote.

No, citizens are not obligated by law to attend the exhibition. However, we encourage all registered voters to check their names and other details in the voters’ register before Election Day.

Ghana has a voter identification requirement at the polls. Voters are asked to present a valid government-issued I.D. Please note that voters who do not have an acceptable form of ID or failed to bring it with them to the polls might not be allowed to vote.

No. The use of still cameras, video camera and other recording devices are strictly prohibited in the polls. This rule also applies to still cameras and other recording features built into many cellphones.

The ban applies to all voters, poll watchers, election workers, and watchers. Exceptions are made for credentialed members of the news media. However, the media’s use of cameras and audio recording equipment has certain restrictions and we have off-limits areas where journalists should not cross into without permission from a Commission official. Failure to obey these rules may result in sanctions.

We discourage the practice of bringing election-related materials at the polls. This includes clothing and buttons bearing election-related images as well as fliers, pamphlets, and stickers. If you display such items in the polling place or within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place, Commission personnel may ask you to cover or remove it.

There are several qualified political parties in Ghana. You may choose one of these parties or you may choose to be unaffiliated with any party.

Yes. In a General Election, you can vote for any candidate of any party.

The Electoral Commission is mandated by law to regulate all political parties in Ghana. We require all interested groups to register with us. Your political organization can become qualified by satisfying certain requirements for registration. Contact us to get more detailed information about how to qualify as a political party in Ghana.

Any person who loses his or her voter I.D. card will within 7 days of realizing the loss report the loss in person to the district officer of the Commission or to a police officer in charge of the nearest police station who will report the loss to the district officer of the Commission within 7 days of the receipt of the report.

Whether a registered voter can vote outside his or her assigned polling station depends on certain factors. If you have moved within the same area since you last registered, you may still be able to vote on Election Day.

If you have a concern regarding voter fraud, voter intimidation, suspicious activity or irregularity involving voter registration or voting, please contact either the Electoral Commission Hotline at +233-302-220000, or contact your local Electoral Commission Regional Office. Several voter advocacy groups provide assistance to voters with problems on Election Day.

To file a complaint, report the incident to an official of the Commission. He or she will make a record of the complaint and can either resolve the matter to your satisfaction or refer the matter to the next higher officer of the Commission for further action.
